In January 2024, shoppers lined up at Target for limited-edition pink Stanley cups. The rush made a simple question interesting: what made this particular water bottle feel worth waiting for?

What happened?

Target released its Cosmo Pink Quencher on December 31, 2023. It sold out quickly. A second pink cup, made with Starbucks, went on sale at Target locations on January 3 for $49.95. Some cups appeared in resale listings for much more.

The Quencher was not new. Stanley introduced it in 2016. What changed later was how often people saw it online, along with new colors and limited releases.

Why did people want it?

  1. Seeing it again and again. A product can seem more common when it appears in many videos. Your feed does not show what everyone owns.
  2. Limited stock. A sold-out color can make waiting feel risky. That feeling does not tell you whether you need a new cup.
  3. Being part of a group. A cup can be useful and also be something people collect or show online.

None of this means the cup is bad. It means the reason to buy one is worth thinking about.

Would I want it if I had not seen it online?

Before your next “I need it” moment

  • Would I still want this if I had not seen the videos?
  • Am I rushing because this color might sell out?
  • Do I already own something that does the same job?

You can enjoy a trend without buying every version of it.
